The session catalog for VMworld is vast, this post should help you with your session selections, by narrowing down the sessions and grouping them by common topics. Also, we have provided a calendar that will help you visualize when sessions occur. Note that all sessions last for one hour, and session registrations are again required for the 2012 show.

The “areas of interest” for sessions we’ve highlighted are: keynotes, EMC must see sessions, super sessions, applications, infrastructure, operations, federal focus and of course networking opportunities.

Simply pick the area (or areas) you’re most interested in, and go to the VMworld Schedule Builder (you’ll need to be signed in to the vmworld.com site to use the schedule tool) and register for the sessions you want. Some sessions may be presented multiple times, so feel free to attend the one that best fits your schedule.

Cloud computing is transforming IT. The way IT deploys infrastructure, provisions resources, builds applications, and provides access to these applications is changing dramatically, promising both greater efficiency and agility. At the same time, many businesses now see data volumes growing so large they break traditional infrastructures – this is what EMC calls Big Data. Managing Big Data represents a huge challenge for IT, but using analytics to provide insight into Big Data promises to transform business, delivering competitive advantage and breakthrough business value. Cloud computing and Big Data will only be viable if they are underpinned by a foundation of trust – trust that the infrastructure will be available 24×7 and trust that data will not be compromised by the latest advanced threats. Join EMC as we address the changes necessary to move to a new model – one which requires IT to transform to an internal service provider, shifting focus from infrastructure cost to business agility. We will discuss EMC’s technology direction and roadmap, our comprehensive integrations with VMware, and customer experiences who have transformed IT and their business.

Applications:

APP-BCA1270 – Virtualizing Oracle Database from Big Iron with Near-zero Downtime

Monday Aug 27 (5:30 PM – 6:30 PM)

Jeff Browning – Tribal Shaman, EMC Corporation

Almost all IT shops have Oracle databases which are running on legacy RISC / UNIX platforms, such as Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX. Many of these customers desperately want to migrate these databases off of UNIX and onto x86 / Linux under vSphere. The reason is cost: Running Oracle on UNIX is extremely expensive. Running Oracle under x86 / Linux on VMware vSphere is far less costly. The barrier to migration is endianness. Since Oracle 10g, the internal Oracle datafile structure has been completely cross-platform, with one exception: Endianness. Endianness refers to the order in which data is stored within the platform’s CPU. Most UNIX platforms are big endian and all x86 platforms, including VMware vSphere, are little endian. Thus, Oracle datafiles must be converted when they are transferred from UNIX to x86 / vSphere. The real challenge is doing this with minimal, if any, downtime. Many of these databases are mission-critical and cannot withstand significant downtime. Unfortunately, the built-in VMware platform migration tools (such as VMware vCenter Converter) only work on the x86 platform as the source platform. For this reason, other tools must be used to migrate the database onto vSphere. This session will cover detailed procedures and relative tradeoffs of the various choices for making this transition in as close to real-time as humanly possible. In other words, various options exist for cross-platform migration of Oracle databases from RISC / UNIX onto vSphere, and each of these will be discussed and compared in detail.

INF-SEC2306 – Automated IT Infrastructure Management and GRC Technologies

Monday, Aug 27 (2:00 PM – 3:00 PM) and Wednesday, Aug 29 (8:30 AM – 9:30 AM)

GeorgE Gerchow – Director, Center for Policy & Compliance, VMware, Inc.

Hoc Phan – Solution Marketing Manager, EMC Corporation

This session will outline the integration of IT Infrastructure Management solutions from VMware, EMC, and Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) Technologies from RSA. Many organizations today struggle with exactly how to leverage the benefits of cloud computing without sacrificing security, control, or compliance. Due to siloed structures or a lack of standardized GRC processes, some IT departments lack visibility, are relegated to manual efforts, and lack a centralized audit function. The abstraction layers introduced by virtualization make configuration management and comPliance validation even more difficult. The presenters will conduct a detailed demonstration of the out-of-the-box integration among VMware, RSA, and EMC technologies, showing the full lifecycle from policy creation, through scanning critical IT assets automaticaLly, and reporting results via a dashboard.
